Like most trips we take, we wing it. But this one was definitely "winging" it. First of all it was a weekday, secondly it was midday so trains were running about as frequent as they could ever. Soon as the train on our platform started up we checked the platform then ran in the tunnel. The train from the other direction would be at that station in 2 minutes so we had a really small gap to make it deep enough and find a hiding spot until the coast was clear. So we run the bench wall and well we can't find the ladder down onto the tracks, so we just jump down then start running full speed down the center of the tracks. I thought I heard the brakes of a train release behind me so I just start running my max speed I'm thinking there's no way we aren't 100% in view. But eventually we find the fork in the tracks we were looking for and we rush onto the non-revenue track and get into cover. The train did end up passing by like 30 seconds later so yeah, winged that. After that it was a relaxed walk a couple of blocks underground until we reached the actual station. The two tracks, one to Rector St on the 1 and one to Bowling Green on the 4/5, met up eventually and from there we could see the start of the curved station. South Ferry Loop, for a lot of people its still a recent memory. It hasn't even been 10 years since it closed down for good. I say for good because it opened and closed 3 times; the first closure was due to 9/11, then it reopened until the replacement station was built and opened in 2009. Hurricane Sandy came by in 2012 and flooded/damaged the new South Ferry station and so the next year the loop was reopened for service while the new station was rehabilitated. And so the loop finally closed its door in 2017 when the new South Ferry opened back up. We took our pics and vids (see below for more) and headed back out along the same tracks, past the station there are no lights present so the tunnel becomes pitch black for a couple hundred feet which is always fun to walk through. Once we made it back to the fork it was once again all about timing it right, there was no service so we couldn't check what the train times were looking like so we waited for when two trains from either direction passed us at the same time. Sure enough about 10 minutes later both trains came and we thought there wouldn't be as good of a time to run as now so soon as the trains passed us we booked it for the platform and luckily this time we made it 3 minutes before any train was gonna be around. Good winging stuff.
